The Unpopular Popular

About Swiss Army Watch Brands

The large number of brands that manufacture Swiss Army watches or Swiss watches make it rather difficult to categorize them into a ranking list. However, taking into consideration factors such as functionality and durability, we can arrive at a vague picture of the best brands in the Swiss watch industry.

Topping the list would be Victorinox given the fact that it is the official supplier to the Swiss army. It has a heritage dating back to 1884, when it began supplying knives to the army. Since then, the company has expanded drastically and became the official supplier of watches and knives to the army. Having taken over Wenger, it is now the sole supplier.

Next in line would be Breitling, the choice for professional aviators. The wide range that Breitling has, though aviator focused, leaves a lot of buyers astonished. With quartz chronographs, to fully automatic, self winding jeweled movements along with high quality materials, Breitling definitely makes its mark in the Swiss watch industry.

There are several brands that focus on elegance as well as functionality. For example, the Daytona series, while not strictly Swiss Army, is still eligible to do so as it has all the needed features to be one.

Next would probably be IWC, another Swiss watch company. This brand forms the foundation for higher end watches and focuses on precision and movements more than anything else but doesn't compromise on anything. Elegant too, but very sturdy, these watches can endure rough handling.

With the plethora of brands, one cannot discriminate easily. If you are looking for a proper Swiss watch, then Victorinox or Wenger should be your choice but by being a little more flexible, you can find something that surpasses all your expectations of a Swiss Army watch.

Swiss Army Watch – Peerless Keeper of Time

The soldier released his parachute mid-air. He reaches the ground and wades through a murky swamp, making sure to raise his rifle above his head. He uses his compass to move towards the coordinates he was given. Then, he peers through his binoculars and sees the fortress that he and his battalion have to storm for a search and rescue mission. After surveying the place for a few minutes, he grabs the communications receiver attached his uniform belt and calls headquarters. They inform him that he and his battalion have to strike at exactly 16:00. The soldier looks at his wrist, only to discover that he had left his Swiss army watch at the base!

The Army, the Army!

Switzerland's military has the characteristics of both a regular army and a militia. It is probably best known for its up-to-date equipment, including Swiss army watches. The army's origins can be traced to the Old Swiss Confederacy's cantonal troops. This group had two functions: it may be called upon to help its own members, or to fight outside threats. These armies were later changed to a federal army. In the late 1980s, the size of the Swiss army began to shrink, and the trend continues to this day.

Pilot Your Way Through Life

Among all the Swiss armed forces, the Swiss Air Force is the smallest. Consequently, there is much competition to get positions as aircraft pilots. In fact, at the age of 16, parachutists and potential pilots must conduct training during their own spare time. One can join a unit of candidate pilots after finishing officer school and finishing basic training. Though you may not join the Swiss Army, you must practice or train hard for any type of position you wish to have. A Swiss army watch can assist you in this undertaking by ensuring that you keep appointments and follow schedules.

An Engineering Marvel

Soldiers training for Switzerland's military learn several practical lessons. Although they are far from begin boy scouts, the Swiss Army lives by the same rule. "Be prepared" is a mantra Swiss soldiers have to live out. It is thus not surprising that Swiss army items, such as the Swiss army watch, are engineered with the same mantra in mind. The Swiss army watch, like the Swiss Army itself, is ready for just about any blow or challenge. Designed to be durable, classy, and precise, the Swiss army watch is the very epitome of everything that's wonderful and amazing about Swiss engineering.

Keeping Time Uniquely

What makes a Swiss army watch so distinctive? The first is the workmanship. The Swiss, in general, are expert watchmakers. Switzerland is even touted as the watch-making center of the world. The Swiss are such excellent watchmakers, in fact, watchmaking is one of the country's oldest, if not the largest, industry. The Swiss government supports watchmaking in every way, including establishing schools and courses for training people in the craft of making Swiss army watches. Other reasons a Swiss army watch is on a league of its own include remarkable finish, durability, precision, and incredible attention to detail.

So, should you get your own Swiss army watch? The answer is a resounding yes. A Swiss army watch will not only help you keep track of of time, it will let you keep time accurately and uniquely.

Swiss Army Watches – Revealing the Secrets

Many products have come out of the nation of Switzerland. Swiss cheese, Velcro, and Swiss chocolate are the most well-known of these products. Watch-making has also become an important part of the industry of Switzerland because of the time taken to make every single Swiss Army watch. At the pinnacle of the watch industry are Swiss Army watches.

Back in 1884, the company which sold the these watches was started. Switzerland was the country where the watch was made and sold. The popularity of the Swiss Army knife led the company to produce watches as well.

The first time a Swiss Army watch was sold in America was in the year 1989. Watch buyers still purchase the Original watch that was sold back in 1989 because of the fame of that model of watch. To celebrate its 125 years of success, the company released an anniversary watch in 2009.

Twenty years has increased the range and style of watches the company now sells. Buyers will pay $125 for the Swiss Army Original. There are other models, such as the Alliance and Viviante, which could $500 to $1000 dollars, due to their dressier and more luxurious nature. The sportier models, such as the Chrono Classic and Infantry, are less expensive, and cost around $300 to $500.

The government of Switzerland is particular about the watches made within the nation. The moving parts of the watches must be inspected in Switzerland. The watches must also be made and assembled in Switzerland. Following these rules results in authentication by Swiss watch dealers.

The analog watches are more complicated and require a lot of intricate parts to make it work. There were more than a hundred parts used in many of the original Swiss Army watches. The care given to each individual watch has made Switzerland the expert in watches.

Due to the time and craftsmanship given to each watch, Swiss Army watches need less repair compared to other brands. However, unexpected accidents can still happen, and parts of the watch can become broken. It is a good thing there are many places that will repair the watches, even though they have a complicated design that contains so many intricate pieces.

Counterfeiting is a problem with any product, but due to the popularity of the Swiss Army watches there are many people who want to duplicate the success this watch has had. The problem is that these fakes are often so similar to the original that the difference is indiscernible. Serial numbers need to be checked to avoid buying a knockoff brand. This problem is further complicated by fake watch dealers replicating real serial numbers and logos. The most proactive way to avoid getting scammed is to pay the high price for your watch. Low prices are usually a good sign that the retailer might be up to no good.

Finding the Best of the Swiss Army Watches

Watches are the single most important thing that you can buy in order to get yourself more respected and well known. Having a luxurious and high-quality watch sets you apart from everybody else. Watches, especially Swiss Army watches, exude your personality, which sets you apart from others and make sure that you are seen.

There are many different families, styles of families, and many different colors of these Swiss Army timepieces. Each family is made for a specific type of lifestyle and personality. Making sure that you get a watch that matches who you are is very important.

One family of timepieces is the classic type Swiss watch. These watches all have steel bands instead of leather and deployment push button clasping mechanisms. They always have a steel case. Some of the watches in this family include, but are not limited to, the Maverick Chronograph, and the Alliance series.

The professional series is one of the most well liked types of watch of the families. These are made to look very nice all the time, and are designed to look professional and luxurious. Watches such as the Divemaster five hundred, the Alpnach, and the Airboss are just a few of these professional-looking types of watches.

The Mechanical series is also a family of watches. All of these pieces have time functions, as well as date functions. Most of these pieces have leather straps instead of the common and overused steel link bands. These pieces also have a buckle clasp, along with a steel case. One type of mechanical series is the Ambassador series.

The chronograph is also a Swiss Army watch. They all have the normal time features that you would expect on a watch plus more. They are chronographs, which mean that they also have timing features such as stopwatches on them also. The infantry and ladies series are both these kinds of watches.

The day night family is another type of family that this company offers. These watches have functions that work at both day and during the night. Most have microscopic lights that illuminate the face when you press a button in the dark. Hunters and all sportsmen can definitely use a watch like this, especially if they frequently happen to be out late. The ambassador series also comes as part of this family.

A series of titanium watches also makes up its own family. This family happens to be the most popular family out there. Instead of having the normal steel case on this watch, the case is made out of the toughest material out there; titanium. These watches are guaranteed never to break as often as the steel cases do. They also have all the regular functions on them.

Why Wenger Watches Continue To Be One Of The Most Desired

In 1893 the famous Wenger watches first came into existence. It was at a time when watches were as much fashion accessories as they were used to tell the time. Wenger watches did nothing to change that fact. Instead they glorified in it. Wenger watches were designed to look good. They were designed for people with too much money whose main concentration in life was how good they looked. The time was a secondary factor; perhaps they never bothered to even look.

The history of the watch as a fashion accessory can be tracked back to the very earliest watches on sale in France in 1574. They were more like a diamond necklaces than a watch and such were very expensive and very few people owned one. If you were lucky enough to own a watch, and it was limited to the upper classes, then you were dealt with a lot of respect. Or if the opportunity arose robbed of it.

Watches as a luxury item did not change for hundreds of years. Why this is not certain, however perhaps it has something to with them kept as merely an object of fashion. Rather than finding new ways to improve them or even to make them cheaper the next major shift seems to the introduction of waistcoats with pockets that the watch could slip into.

It was no better in England than it was in France. Diamond bearings rendered them unaffordable to all but a few people. It was not until machines were developed to make watches that they became more available to the general public. In the early part of the 19th century these machines were developed and started to make watches at a good rate, though these watches still associated with the upper classes. Much through habit rather anything else. When it became apparent there was money to be made from the watches, factories started to appear in the cities and the prices came down drastically. It still wasn't a practical item however and people were rushing to buy them merely to look good.

However the company has gone through many major shifts. In 1895 a group called Delsberg took over then the company merged soon after with Schweitzer. For almost ten years the company remained unchanged until 1907 when Theo Wenger became sole owner. The biggest change for the company came only one year later when Wenger started to market Swiss army knives and then in 2003 the Swiss Business Tools globally.

The Wenger Company have always maintained a high quality which also means expensive and today their watches are on sale for between $150 to $500.

Swiss Army Watches Are So Precise!

The Swiss have always been known for mechanical precision. Their timepieces are no exception. But even before they introduced Swiss Army watches, Victorinox was already well-known for another product: the Swiss Army knife. This item was introduced in 1897.

Victory for Victorinox

Karl Elsener was the founder of Victorinox. He wanted to manufacture a product that would be in great demand. He wanted not only to profit from manufacturing this product, he also wanted to give jobs to the Swiss citizenry. The Swiss Army knife then became famous all over the world. Since the time of Lyndon Johnson, Presidents of the United States have gifted their guests with Swiss Army knives.

When the Swiss Army knife reached the zenith of its popularity, Elsener turned Victorinox to manufacturing a better wrist watch. The result is Swiss Army watches that are as popular as Swiss Army knives. Over time, styles have evolved and various models have been added to the line of Swiss Army watches. The performance of Swiss Army watches is excellent. This has made the brand a recognizable mark of quality all over the world. And they look good too!

Watch It!

But Swiss Army watches bear no relation to Swiss Army knives except in name and quality of build. What is so great about them you ask? Well, the "Vivante" collection for ladies is aesthetically attractive. It does not matter whether they are on a wrist or not. These are striking pieces. You can even choose between a steel or leather band. Dials are made of mother-of-pearl and some the pricier models are even adorned with diamonds.

If you are a businessman, you need a model for ostentatious display. Your clients and the people you do business with will look at you in a different light with the "Ambassador" line. If sports watches are more your thing, check out the "Active" line. Some of the "Active" watches are functional underwater up to 330 feet. Want something unique and monstrously extravagant? Extra-special is the best way to describe the Legacy 2006 Reserve de Marche Platine. This fabulous timepiece can be yours for a mere $20,000. There will only ever be 60 of these watches.

When it comes to Swiss Army watches, there is something for everyone. And every Swiss Army watch comes with a three year warranty. As if you needed more incentive to consider buying one. Remember, you are not just buying any old watch, you are buying a quality product with a longstanding tradition and track record of reliability behind it. It is precisely this reliability which makes it so valuable. What more could you ask for in a watch? Not only is it durable, it is attractive as well. It makes a perfect gift for a loved one. It can even be viewed as a personal investment as its value will only increase over time. There is no reason to consider any other brand. Timekeeping is raised to a beautiful art form by these beautiful watches and you definitely will not regret your choice when you glance at your watch to tell the time.

Victorinox Swiss Army AirBoss Automatic 42mm Watch Is Announced At Basel 2011

New to the AirBoss collection from Victorinox Swiss Army, the AirBoss Automatic 42mm watch is part of their more complicated line of timepieces. This is a mechanical watch done in stainless steel metal with a simple automatic movement with three hands. It has a round dial is easily read and is surrounded by a beveled flange ring. The minute indicators have a technical font on the inner bezel and the extra numerals in the 24 hour military format are on the inner part of the dial.

Applied hour markers are done in Arabic styled numerals and are coated with luminescence as are the diamond-shaped hour and minute hands and the triangle at 6 o'clock. Traditionally the triangle is found at 12 o'clock but this placement is thought to be done to draw attention to the date window which can be found at 6 o'clock. The watch is water-resistant to a depth of 100 meters and has an AR coated scratch-resistant, anti-reflective sapphire crystal. The dial comes in either charcoal or silvered.

The Airboss Mach 4 was released two years prior in a 45mm case size, this year the scale has been reduced in a bit more elegant size to appeal to a wider range of consumers. The dial is also more refined, but the military look remains in the brand. Movement is ETA 2824-2 blank caliber with 25 jewels and 28,800 vph made in Switzerland that can be admired through the exhibition case back protected by mineral glass. A brown leather strap with beige contrasting stitch completes the look of this handsome timepiece. A stainless steel bracelet can also be selected for a dressier look.

The Airboss Collection, as with all genuine Victorinox Swiss Army watches, is sold through the official Victorinox Swiss Army retailers and jewelers. They cannot be purchases on internet sites of non-retailor affiliates. This ensures that one purchases authentic watches. If it doesn't say Swiss Army, Victorinox Swiss Army or Victorinox on the dial is not an authentic watch. All Victorinox watches are authenticated by the Swiss Government and have a 3 year limited warranty.

Since 1897 the Original Swiss Army Knife has come from the village of Ibach, Switzerland, Victorinox has become known in more than 100 countries since that time and has a reputation for versatility, functionality, quality and precision. This heritage extends to their Swiss Army Watches which are a reflection of their ingenuity in design and durability. The "cross and shield" represents the legend of Victorinox and the Swiss Army brand.
